Sir Rod Stewart has shared a major announcement about his career, leaving fans heartbroken.

The 79-year-old Maggie May hit-maker took to social on Wednesday to share an update about his future singing and touring plans.

Stewart has spoken candidly about retirement in the past, sharing he has no plans to give up his singing career just yet.

However, he has stunned fans this week by announcing plans to scale back a little.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, he shared a post which read: “This will be the end of large-scale world tours for me,” but he reassured fans they haven’t seen the last of him as he added: “But I have no desire to retire.”

The statement continued: “I love what I do, and I do what I love.

“I’m fit, have a full head of hair, and can run 100 meters in 18 seconds at the jolly old age of 79.

“I’d like to move onto a Great American Songbook, Swing Fever tour the year after next – smaller venues and more intimacy.

“But then again, I may not…” the iconic rocker signed off: “The Ambiguous Sir Rod Stewart”.

The singer left the caption section empty, but fans soon filled the comments, expressing their heartache over the news.

Along with crying face emojis, one person penned: “You are a rock legend. The best in the world.”

Another shared: “You so deserve to retire when you decide it’s right – music from The BEST for so many decades – I’ve seen you so many times over the years from 1978 to your latest UK tour – I managed to meet you at your booking signing in Epping had a great day so excited and of course meeting beautiful Penny – I hope I manage to get tickets when they are announced especially if venues are going to smaller – you literally are Simply The Best x.”

“Do whatever suits you Rod, only you know your limits. You will always be the best. Xx,” a third encouraged him.

“We love you!!!” another simply wrote, with someone else adding: “Germany is always there for you, boss.”

“It was a honor to see you in Budapest. Thank you Sir Rod,” someone else reflected.

One shared a wish as they added: “Have always wanted to see you live, an intimate acoustic setting would be lovely!” before concluding: “Thank you for the music, sir!” (sic)

Many others simply left emojis with hearts and tears as they responded to the announcement.

Recently, Stewart has sparked some concerns as he’s had to cancel some tours due to health issues.

In August, the Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? singer admitted he was “absolutely gutted” to have to cancel an upcoming show after doctors diagnosed the rocker with strep throat.

News of his decision to axe the gig came just days after he addressed his health concerns in a new interview, claiming to be at ease with the fact his “days are numbered”.
